Home inventory guides

What to include in a home inventory

Begin with items that would be expensive, difficult or emotionally taxing to reconstruct from memory, then broaden the inventory over time.

Start with high-impact items

Electronics, tools, jewelry, appliances, collections and custom furniture usually deserve complete records first.

Record identifiers

Serial numbers, model names, dimensions and distinguishing details help separate one product from a similar replacement.

Capture ownership context

Purchase date, seller, receipt and appraisal information create a trail. Add notes for gifts or inherited items when no receipt exists.

Review once a year

Add major purchases, archive disposed items and refresh replacement values with a dated note.
