How to create a home inventory on a Mac
A useful home inventory is less about listing every object and more about capturing enough identity and proof for another person to understand what was there.
Start with rooms, not categories
Walk the same path you would use after a loss. Rooms reduce context switching and make it easier to notice missing items.
Photograph identity, not just appearance
Capture the whole item and the model or serial label. For sets, photograph the components together and note anything that is stored elsewhere.
Attach source documents
Receipts, invoices and appraisals explain where values came from. Keep the original file and record a clear replacement value separately.
Export a portable copy
Store a readable PDF or CSV plus evidence outside the home. Confirm that another trusted person can open the packet without your inventory app.
